Structure and number of seats:

 

The Constitution of 1996 structured the Algerian Parliament with a bicameral system. The Parliament is made of:
              The National people’s Assembly,
             
The Council of Nation

The National People’s Assembly resulting from the legislative elections of June 30th, 2002 has a total of 389 seats, of which 8 are reserved to the nationals living abroad, shared out among 48 constituencies as concerns the elections in the country, and 6 areas for the election of members representing the migrant community.

 

The representation rule is one (01) seat for 80.000 inhabitants, plus one (01) more seat for every remaining group higher than 40.000 inhabitants. In any case, the number of seats cannot be inferior to 4 for the wilayas which demographic density is lower than 350.000 inhabitants.
